If so, the deadline is approaching to register for a well-known Finnish language course to be held in Oulu this month and next.

Oulu Summer University’s ‘Finnish Language Basic Course 2’ will be held in the city centre from 30th July to 10th August and assumes a basic knowledge of Finnish.

Taught by Anne Palokangas, who was voted Summer University teacher of the year in 2011, the course, which is on every evening from 4.30pm to 7pm, costs 50 euros. The registration deadline is 12th July.

Monday also sees the arrival in Oulu of 36 university students, from all around the world, to spend four weeks in Oulu on an intensive Finnish-language course. Run by CIMO, the immersion course, made-up of university students studying Finnish at their home universities, includes people from Russia, Slovakia and the USA.

Course secretary Tanja Tourunen told 65DN that, in housing the various students, ‘we have tried to mix up the different nationalities as much as possible so that they can’t speak English or their own language.’
