Fifth of Oulu Exposed to Continuous Traffic Noise
One in five Oulu residents are exposed to the continuous whoosh of traffic, according to a recent report.
A fifth of residents are constantly exposed to 55 decibels of noise, the overwhelming majority of which comes from roads and in particular from highways. Noise from railways makes up just 5 percent of the total.
However, this makes Oulu considerably quieter than other large Finnish cities. In Tampere every third person is exposed to this level of continuous noise while in Helsinki it is fifty percent of residents.
The data is taken from a noise study conducted by the City of Oulu.
