Travel to the Countryside for Dental Treatment
Private dental treatment is significantly cheaper in the countryside, according to a researcher. And the same may be true in Oulu.
Dr Hennamari Mikkola, who works for KELA, has noted that the differences are so substantial that it may be worth Helsinki residents commuting to the countryside for treatment.
In Oulu, there also clear differences between the cost of private dental treatment in central Oulu and in surrounding rural districts. Many dentists in the city centre charge 50e for a consultation and, in most cases, another 50e to put in a filling. The lowest offer was 36.10e and the highest 80e.
The first dentist that 65DN contacted in Muhos, a small town near Oulu, charged 40e for a consultation and a 40e to put in a filling. Others were similar prices.

It’s really worth getting on the list at your local health centre. It seems to take 6 months for a first appointment when one first applies, but once you’re in ‘the system’, you’re in, and it’s a lot cheaper. 8 fillings for about 30(?) euro recently…Scrubbing 10 years of plaque off – €15. Remember telling my mate in Dallas about my emergency root canal. I told him it cost 11. “11,000? Yike, here, it’s only about 2,000 – with insurance”. “Er, no €11. Price of a couple of beers”…
‘She-who-must-be-obeyed’ paid a heck of a lot more recently for much the same – over 10 times, IIRC. In my case (Tuiran Terveysasema) the service/work was jut as good. Grief, I didn’t even need an anaesthetic!
Andy, you forgot to write.
A set of teeth – priceless
On a serious note, how are the dentist’s English at the local health centre? I’ve been to a private one in Oulu who i know speaks good english, but due to the cost, I don’t go as often as i should.
