Schizophrenia experts from around the world are gathered in Oulu this week for a major conference on the debilitating mental illness.

Speakers include Prof. Mary Cannon, of Ireland’s Royal College of Surgeons, who will look at prenatal and childhood risk factors for developing the problem, other researchers will examine international differences in levels of schizophrenia, the relationship between schizophrenia and verbal intelligence and the degree to which schizophrenia is genetic. Researchers have come from as far afield as Australia and the USA to present papers at the conference.

The conference is taking place at the Lasaretti Hotel until Wednesday. It is organised by the Oulu Psychiatric Epedemiology Society in conjunction with Oulu University.

It is widely accepted amongst experts that Finland has significantly higher levels of schizophrenia than neighbouring countries, for reasons which remain uncertain.
