Daycare Centres Taken With a Pinch of Salt

Food at Oulu daycare centres contains unhealthily high levels of salt, recent research has concluded.

Research by the Oulu Environmental Agency found that the recommended levels of salt in the daycare centres’ hot lunches were exceeded in 75 percent of samples. Morning porridge, however, was generally within the boundaries of the salt recommendations.

The study suggests that the reason for this may lie in the centralisation of daycare meal provision. The meals are often made by one organization and distributed in the centres. The central organization does not take into account the lower recommended salt allowance for children.
