Finland’s National Epic in English?
British storyteller Nick Hennessey will perform extracts from Kalevala in English this week.
The storyteller and musician will transport his audience to Finland’s mythic past on 16th February at 6pm at Aitta 24, near the Market Square. Tickets will cost 12 euros.
Hennessey, 44, was brought up in Alderley Edge, a village near Manchester, itself the subject of well-known song ‘The Wizard of Alderley Edge’ by folk singer Pete Coe. Always fascinated by the rural, he has a degree in ‘Countryside Studies’ and a PhD in Cultural Geography.
His Oulu performance is part of a broader tour – ‘Where the Bear Sleeps’ – in which, according to his website, ‘Nick will lead you on a journey from our own shores to snow-filled forests of the far North. On his many travels through Finland, Nick works deeply with the national epic The Kalevala, rooting out seeds of stories that bloom into strange and wonderful flowers. With all the magic of the Northern Lights and the drama of the tundra, these stories will warm the heart on a cold winter’s night.’
