City Helps Organise Japan Air Guitar Final in Tsunami Town
The final round of the Japanese National Air Guitar Championship will take place in Sendai today.
Since 2005, the championship has taken place in Tokyo, with the eventual victor making their way to Oulu to compete in the international final.
But this year, the Air Guitar Association, the City of Oulu and the City of Sendai have worked together to bring the final to the historic city which was badly hit by the Tsunami and earthquake disaster of March 2011.
According to Takaka Uchida, Business Oulu’s international co-ordinator for Japan, the final is taking place in Sendai – where hundreds were killed and thousands made homeless last year – in order to ‘cheer’ everyone up and ‘make everyone smile.’
Sendai was established in 1600 and is university town with a population of around a million. It is on the eastern coast of Japan’s large, central island.
