I Would Advise Barack Obama To... Print E-mail

65 Degrees North journalists humbly offer Barack Obama the benefit of their advice on his day of inauguration. Just in case he’s listening...

“I would advise Barack Obama to re-create a U.S. relationship with Russia that would not be based on geography of influence, but on trade and communication. I wish that Obama would not repeat Bush's mistakes in alienating Russia and other Eastern European countries. The first step towards more stability in the region and calming down heated relations would be to re-evaluate the need for and realization of the missile defence system in Poland and in the Cheque Republic.

However, Obama should be aware of Russia's unpredictability and not to give in to Russia's provocation. Best of luck Obama!”
Vytautas Kraujalis

“The most valuable advice I can give Barack Obama is keep an eye out for Finnish terrorists.  They usually study at a university or a polytechnic, and are recognisable through their different coloured overalls, which divide them into different terrorist groups. Every year, mostly at the end of April, meetings are held in various parts of Finland to discuss the best way to unite their terrorist powers and become successful against the US. During such meetings, self-destructive tendencies can even be observed; however, these are only ‘experiments’ with certain alcoholic liquids that may be used later against the enemy.” (Editor: Ahem, yes, thanks Jasmina.)
Jasmina Schreck

“The worse the world’s financial crisis, the more wars around the world, the higher the unemployment ratio, the higher the price index, the poorer normal people’s lives. Obama really needs to do something to save the American and the world.”
Yingying Huan

“The two most important things for Barack Obama to do first are to save lives in Gaza, and to address the downturn in the world’s financial markets. So my tip would be to continue to push forward in the peace movement. Here I believe he could make an impact. At the same time, as US leader, he should make sure the US plays a significant role in recovering the economy as soon as possible.

Good luck Obama, good luck world.”
Zhilin Yang

“America must change its direction. Instead of building walls, it should remove barriers. Since still USA is the number one country in the world, it has to show the rest of us a more sustainable, green way of wealth and growth. Please think about Europe as one entity and try not to take it apart.”
Tamas Erdélyi

“My tip for Obama is 'Don't believe all the hype the media is beating up that he is going to be the saviour of the world.  He seems to have assembled a very competent team of advisers and should use these to the utmost of their abilities to formulate the strategies necessary to assist in solving the considerable economic, social and political problems facing the World and the US in particular.  Above all, with the current economic problems in the US, he should avoid being too protectionist in his policies even though this may go against the grain of US history.'”
Alan Pembshaw

“Barrack Obama’s biggest challenge as the new American President is undoubtedly to pull America out of its current economic crisis. He comes across as an intelligent, determined individual and this is his chance to change the world’s perception of American presidents as bungling, inarticulate men who are incapable of public speaking without someone having prepared their every word beforehand for them.”
Michelle Nicolson

“Our Obama who art in the White House, we know you are the Messiah.  Just look at the crowds you drew in Berlin last year.  So we expect a miracle from you and know you can fix the global financial crisis.  Don’t let us down!”
Patrick Nesbitt

“Dear Mr Obama: Outlaw firearm ownership or toughen gun legislation in the private sector. Nothing good comes from deadly force. It will make the US a better place. Maybe a changed US policy will convince Finnish politicians to rule out private gun ownership in this heavily armed society as well.”
