The City of Oulu has awarded a licence to 'Birdstep Technology' to secure its mobile phone network. The 'Safemove' technology will hopefully ensure access to information and services regardless of place or time.

According to Birdstep, the move will increase productivity and cut down on costs as well as make 'environmental savings.'

Oulu is one of the world's leading mobile technology centres and it has been described as having a particularly 'progressive' approach to technology by the company. This is exemplified in the pan-Oulu internet service which gives everybody in the city centre free access to the city's wireless internet.

'The City of Oulu is internationally known as a pioneer in the systematic development of a wireless city network. PanOULU complemented by Mobile Wimax offers an exceptionally modern and extensive network platform for the SafeMove Mobile VPN service, creating excellent prerequisites for new operating models and increased operational efficiency", says Birdstep Technology CEO Matti Mujunen.

"The Birdstep solution allows us to create a mobile work solutions concept that is both transparent and secure from the users' point of view. The broad user base of the City's organisation values uniform and easy-to-use solutions. The solution's ease of use is a key factor from the perspective of increasing productivity and application to work", says Ilari Heikkinen, IT Manager for the City of Oulu
