City Out For Late Night Shopping Print E-mail

ImageIn a fusion of late-night shopping, outdoor dance and fashion shows, Oulu town centre saw big crowds yesterday for its annual 'Korttelihaipaikka.'

The term, in Oulu slang, means 'block bustle': a four-hour shopping event designed to entertain crowds and loosen wallets, as downtown stores offer discount products and open doors to 11 pm.

Stalls sold candy and pulla, and the Oulu Symphony orchestra performed on a pavillion in the marketplace.

"This is impressive!" commented L.J, a business student watching a fashion show, "-the models are even moving around. Those guys are so cool. Are they Finnish?"

Fashion, including the current offerings from clothes stores Vero Moda, Micks, Pukumies, and Vima, was followed by 'street dance' from local dance school Citydance, who started up on Oulu's Hallituskatu in 1990.

Fireworks topped off the night at 11 pm, and stores reported having sold more-than-average amounts of merchandise.
