Oulu and its seemingly endless summer season… Print E-mail

ImageFor many the holiday season is traditionally the time for travelling. Some are going for a beach holiday on the Canary Islands, some plan an adventure trip through the rainforest . . .  and some visit Oulu. In any case it is obligatory to make the people who stayed at home envious and send them a post card from the holiday resort.

If you decided for Oulu you are confronted with a variety of post cards showing the city’s most important spots: The market hall, the wooden houses around the market place (with the kahvila makasiini leading the way) or on Pikisaari; the yellow cathedral, the Town Hall, the guest harbour, the pavilion, the pedestrian street and of course the police man in all his majesty. What all have in common, though, is that all pictures are taken in summer.

In fact the most common image turns out to be the pedestrian street Rotuaari with people in shorts and t-shirts sitting outside in one of the numerous cafes. Not enough with that, one post card shows two women in bikinis lolling on the beach Nallikari. It seems that we are blessed with the eternal summer now, and all polar bears were chased away by the heat.

The situation slightly changes in the market hall. Apart from the usual summer-sun-Rotuaari pictures also alternative, artistically-drawn post cards are available. And -lo and behold!- some of them show Oulu at different times than the endless summer season. Also one conventional photo card for all the believers can be found, displaying the cathedral from the outside and the inside in different perspectives, as well as post cards from Lapland.

Thus there’s nothing left to say but to wish everyone a great holiday in Oulu, the Finnish Riviera on the sunny side of Lapland!
