There was an odd silence around Kempele's Zeppelin shopping centre on Saturday as its biggest store, Prisma, was closed to the public after receiving threats leading to the shutting of the entire shopping centre.
On Thursday of last week, the store was blackmailed with demands for money. Police have already arrested in a suspect in connection with the blackmail and they are continuing their investigations. On Friday, the police arrested a 30 year-old man from Oulu on a charge of extortion and he is currently being kept in police custody. The arrested man had only the store on the Zeppelin shopping centre and was after money, according to a police investigator.
A threatening letter arrived at the Prisma store on Thursday afternoon demanding money. The police were contacted and the store was evacuated. Zeppelin has been closed since Thursday and a decision will be made about when to re-open it on Sunday. According to the police, Thursday's incident is the first extortion attempt against a supermarket in Finnish history.
