Police have detained a 24 year-old man on suspicion of carrying out the rape which occurred in the city centre in the early hours of last Sunday morning. The man gave himself up to police on Wednesday but strenuously denies the raping the woman.

'The suspect understood that it was clearly himself who had been identified so he felt it best to give himself up,' said Detective Chief Inspector Matti Luolavirta of Oulu police.

The man answers to the description provided by the woman who has alleged rape. According to Luolavirta, the victim and the suspect had been with each other on the night the incident is supposed to have occurred.

'The man admitted that he had been with the woman and that they had driven in a taxi together. He, however, denies rape' said Luolavirta. The suspect has also denied that he had sex with the woman.

A thorough medical examination was conducted on the victim after she came to the police which is likely to have determined whether or not she had engaged in sexual intercourse and even with whom.
