Are you looking for a good dose of ABBA? Or have you even wondered how Pierce Brosnan would look singing and dancing? If both of your answers are yes, then you should go and see Mamma Mia! - a movie tribute to ABBA.
I tried to go and see it with an open mind even though I am usually not too crazy about this particular genre. After the first half an hour I strongly doubted that this was going to be a musical I would enjoy but the story managed to turn that around. If you ask me what are the first words that come to my mind thinking of Mamma Mia! I would say cute, charming and full of ABBA songs. Sophie (Amanda Seyfield) is a bride-to-be and she really wants her dad to give her away at the wedding. The only problem is that she has three candidates for the position and she invites all of them to her wedding without anyone else knowing – especially not her mother Donna (Meryl Streep). She has problems accepting that her daughter is all grown up and would prefer to keep her by her side for just a bit longer. Sophie thinks she will have no problem determining who her real father is but things get complicated. Right before the wedding all three think they are her dad and will give her away. Things unravel in an interesting way and at the end the perfect wedding day doesn’t pass in vain. The singing and dancing parts of the movie were great, always worthwhile and with distinctive purposes. Some were there to tell a story, some to amuse and a few to touch our hearts. And the dancing seemed to be happening all around the island; on a peer, beach, inside the house or in the market square. There is even some dancing in the rain with topless men. Sorry guys, no naked ladies in this one. It took a while to get used seeing Pierce Brosnan singing and dancing. Just knowing about his macho James Bond roles and seeing him in this one left me confused. Overall a nice upbeat movie that left me singing ABBA songs in my mind on the way home and therefore deserves a good three stars out of five. Director: Phyllida Lloyd; Starring Amanda Seyfried, Stellan Skarsgård, Pierce Brosnan, Colin Firth, Meryl Streep, Julie Walters, Christine Baranski.
