Oulu Churches get a Taste of Irish Music Print E-mail

Some of Oulu’s Lutheran churches will play host to specially organised Irish music concerts to celebrate Mothers Day this year.

Organised by the Irish Music Society of Oulu, the free concerts will involve traditional Irish bagpipe-player Michael Vignoles and Raymond O’Donnell, who is the organist of Galway Cathedral in the west of Ireland, playing together.

According to Vignoles, ‘Putting the pipes along with organ created a real magical sound.’ Vignoles has performed for the Irish president, at the funerals of bishops and at requiem masses.  Vignoles has been playing the ‘uilleann pipes’ for over a quarter-century and has just released his album, O, For A Closer Walk With God. The album grew out of his love for the 14th-century church music he had been singing for over a decade with the Galway Cathedral choir and his recent performances in the cathedral playing alongside O’Donnell.

The Irish Music Society of Oulu, which also organised the city’s Irish Music Festival in October, describes the music as ‘exceptionally moving.’  ‘Uilleann pipes’ are Ireland’s traditional bagpipes which, unlike Scottish bagpipes, are inflated by arm movement. ‘Uilleann’ comes from the Irish word for ‘albow’.
