The historic Merijal candy factory in Tuira is being demolished to make room for new expensive apartments. Construction of seven new buildings starts in April. The first buildings will have views of Hietasaari.
The houses will be built by YIT Rakennus Ltd for four different real estate companies. YIT bought the old factory in 2004. A spokesperson for YIT says that the new flats have "already raised interest." Prices will be top of the range for Oulu due to their location - the large and most expensive flat of the first construction phase, a 171-square-metre penthouse, is priced at 937,660 euros.
Merijal factory was known for its tar pastille Tervaleijona and was a popular destination for school class trips. Tervaleijona arrived in shops in 1934 but production was moved to Turku in 1996. (Kaleva)
