New parking arrangements around Oulu airport are causing problems for both drivers and airport staff, reports Oulu newspaper Kaleva. From February 4, the round car park facing the airport terminal was reserved exclusively for hire cars, disableds, and taxis, but most passengers and their families have ignored warning signs and continued to park in the circle.
The legal place to park – for both long and short stays – is in one of the 700 spaces behind the barrier, to the immediate left when entering the airport grounds. Chief of airport services Eija Honkonen described the situation as “a complete catastrophy; the circle was full of private cars.” Exasperated staff resorted to barring anyone from parking in the circle, though this week ordered taxis were permitted to enter. Police have promised to scrutinise the area and fine any illegal parkers as promptly as possible. Parking is also illegal in front of the terminal, travelers are reminded. Drivers’ reactions were furious. “This is madness!” one driver commented; “- the circle was a good place to pick up passengers.” Timo, 24, described the arrangements as ‘idiotic; taxis and hire cars have taken over everywhere.” On a happier note, ticket machines are said to be accepting credit cards.
