KissingLeap Day was a popular wedding day in the Northern Ostrobothnia Magistrate in Oulu. Altogether 17 couples were wed on February 29th.

Eila Keränen and Anna-Liisa Jounila of the Ouku Registry Office conducted the ceremonies. Jounila expressed slight surprise at the sudden interest in getting married on Leap Year Day.

She cannot remember it being particularly noted before in Oulu, although usually holidays are popular times for weddings, she says, as the couple can begin their honeymoon right away.

This year Valentine’s Day marked another busy day for weddings despite being in the middle of the week.  Jounila says that the next busy day for them is expected to be August 8, being 08.08.08, and already both the Registry Office and the churches are being booked up quickly. Weddings are conducted free of charge at Registry Office during business hours. (Kaleva)
