Universities in eight Arctic countries have signed an agreement for cooperation in research, education and student and teacher exchange. The agreement also encompasses cooperation with businesses and international marketing. Rectors of 37 member universities of the University of the Arctic signed this significant agreement in Rovaniemi last week. The agreement of cooperation is unique in the international university world but also the first document of this magnitude between Arctic universities. Among the 37 first signatories were the rectors from the Universities of Oulu, Lapland and Helsinki, the Oulu University of Applied Sciences and the Educational Centre of Sami Area. The rest of the 110 member universities of the University of the Arctic are expected to sign the agreement during 2008. The universities emphasise, among other issues, the importance of working with policy makers to ensure that the south realizes that the Arctic is becoming an extremely important region for them not least because of its untapped energy sources. Another topical issue is to join forces to tackle adaptation to climate change. (Kaleva)
