A Slice of Life in Oulu Print E-mail

Let me tell you a little about living in Intiö - a place we’ve called home for the past year.

The area of Intiö is bordered by Myllytulli, Raksila, Kasarmi and the freeway.  It is an excellent location due to its proximity to the supermarkets in Raksila, the railway station and the downtown centre. Since we don’t own a vehicle here, it was important to us to have all the amenities within walking distance. Intiö meets our needs perfectly in that regard.

We moved here from Toppila when my husband’s office relocated to Peltola.  There are not many places in the world where one has a ten-minute “commute” through lovely, forested bike paths to their office. There are many cycle paths throughout the neighbourhood.  We often walk down by the river either towards the downtown centre or out towards the Turkansaari ferry.

There are numerous apartment complexes in the area with many more under construction. This means there is an abundance of apartments available for those wishing to rent or purchase.  The apartments we are living in formerly housed army families.  They have been completely renovated and updated.  The rental rates are comparable with most areas of Oulu and we have been very pleased with our decision to relocate here. The property management company (Ovenia) seems to be very flexible and willing to go the extra mile when it comes to keeping their tenants. The property maintenance staff has responded quickly and efficiently to all service requests.
We are within easy walking distance of the Raksila swimming hall and the hockey arena.  Something to consider if you are a Kärpät fan!  The Oulu International Preschool as well as numerous kindergartens (or paiväkoti) are also easily reachable on foot.  If you are looking to entertain youngsters, or visitors, then the museums nearby on Hupisaaret are a must.  Tietomaa Science Centre (found by heading for the tall tower from which there is a great view of Oulu) has fascinating exhibitions for young and old alike, plus a massive screen for informative films which are shown daily in English.  The art museum has a range of shows throughout the year, a café where the cakes are works of art in themselves, and it is free on Fridays if you are watching your money.  The Northern Ostrobothnian Museum recently reopened after a revamp and there are the Doghill Kids in the basement for kids of all ages to enjoy if history is not your thing.  The museum area is set in beautiful parkland, close to the river, with a playground at the heart of it and a café which opens in summer just next to that.

Intiö is indeed a most desirable place to live.  If you are looking for a new home in the Oulu area, we would highly recommend it.
