The city offers guided tours in English on July 4, 11 and 18. Departure’s at 18.00 from the city hall, at Kirkkokatu 2a. July’s run of festivals starts with Rotuaari Piknik, the annual city festival from July 4 to 7 that takes place at the Rotuaari Square downtown and includes entertainment and performances by Finnish rocksters like Hanna Pakarinen. Tickets can be purchased at the usual places and cost about 21€. The program and webpages detail times and line-ups.
Prepare yourself mentally for the 18th Oulu Garlic Festival (Valkosipuliyö), from July 12 to 14. The whole town will smell like garlic for two days. Taste your bravery in the marketplace with garlic chocolate and garlic ice cream accompanied by live music. Wait as food specialists n the traditional garlic food competition are judged by a jury, the best winning the “Golden Lamb” – definitely one worth checking out. Third in line is the fifth Suven Sävel Summer Music Festival on July 21 and 22 in the marketplace. Bands from all over the world will play, and those of a musical bent will compete in the Suven Sävel and lyric writing competition. Tickets cost 25€ at the usual places, and details in Finnish are available online. Then, of course, the Qstock Rock Festival , for the fifth time on the island of Kuusisaari, close to downtown Oulu. Over July 27 and 28 you’ll have the chance to see twelve acts including The Rasmus, Turbonegro, Zen Café, The Coffinshakers, and Deep Insight. Tickets are 38/45€ a day or 55€ the lot. Buy them at the door and the price is 5€ higher. Last but not least, the Oulunsalo Soi- X Oulunsalo Musical Festival for classical music fans, from July 26 to August 3. Most of the concerts take place in the Oulunsalo culture centre. The festival offers Grieg, Brahms, Vivaldi, Shostakovich, and Sibelius, and several childrens’ concerts, ticket prices varying between 5 and 20€ - and a detailed program is published online.
Every Sunday at 15.00 and every Saturday, Wednesday and Thursday at 19.00 until the end of the month, the open air Hupisaari Summer Theater at Hupisaari will show “Raksilan iloiset rouvat” (“The Merry Ladies from Raksila”). Ticket prices are between 7 and 10£ at the ticket office in Stockmann. Take your family for a walk within the Linnansaari park. Linnansaari island connects Tuira with the city center, and the old navigation school, closed 1910, now hosts a small café, open during the summer months. And Hupisaaret is a small green oasis in the heart of the city, a picturesque park consisting of a dozen small islands connected by white wooden bridges. Tired of walking? Try PotnaPekka , the mini-train that travels on two different routes in Oulu. Operating since 1989, PotnaPekka goes via Nallikari or Hupisaaret through cycling paths and roads for light traffic. Both routes leave by the stone ball at Rotuaari and return after one hour. You can hop off on the way if you like, commentary on sights is in English and Finnish, and tickets are between 2 and 4€ per person.
