What's On In Oulu: June Print E-mail
By Mirja Krause

Summer’s finally arrived in Oulu, and the days are getting longer - which gives us plenty of time to get out of the house. Mirja Krause has some suggestions to make your days exciting.

For art fans, the Harma gallery on the second floor of Kirkokatu 11b has an exhibition of sculptures and pictures by Eva-Kaisa Jakkila, Esa Leskilä and Jussi Valtakari from 12pm to 4pm every day; entrance is free. Alternatively, “Lebensraum,” a ‘photo exploration’ of growing up between two cultures, tries to answer the question “Am I German or Finnish?” Presented by Ilkka Tolonen at Rantagaleria in Hallituskatu 7, the exhibition will run from June 9 to July 29, open every day from 10.00 to 20.00.

For all those with itchy feet who love art, Gallery 5 at at Hallituskatu 5 is presenting “A Window To Andalusia” by Hilkka Inkala. The exhibition will continue until June 17, open from Wednesday to Fri at 12.00 to 18.00, and from Saturday to Sunday, 12.00 to 16.00.

At the Oulu city library, Fusion, an exhibition of art by Oulu UAS students, displays both foreign and local students' works related to art and culture – for example, study or project works, short texts, books, paintings, drawings, cartoons, photographs, leaflets, videos, and installations.

If you're a fan of jazz, don’t miss the Oulu All Star Big Band Festival from June14 to June 16. Top performers from Sweden, Cuba and Finland will turn up at Radisson SAS. A festival pass is 30/40 euros and can be purchased at the ticket offices in Oulu. More of a pop-head? Check out Martti Servo, a humorous Finnish pop band playing at Ravintola Foxia on June 15, tickets 12 euros.

For long Finnish summer nights outside, consider the Hietasaari Summer Theater premiere of “The Merry Ladies from Raksila” on June 22 at 19.00, at Hupisaari; tickets cost between 7 and 10 euros. Or visit the Oulu Golf Club at Sankivaaran Ulkoilukeskus, the northernmost 36-hole golf course in the world: during June and July you can play 24 hours a day. The course surrounds the beautiful Sanginjoki River environment, where hilly moors, riverbeds and forest ponds make the play exotic.

The Tar Burning Week takes place in Oulu from June 22 to 28, and includes Tar rowing on the Oulu River and the Tar Rowing Fair. On June 16 you can follow the award ceremony for the Tar rowing regatta.

For family ententrainment, head to the Speedpark at Hietasaarentie 9, which on June 9 celebrates its twenty-fifth anniversary party and is open from 12.00 to 18.00. Tickets are between one euro and eight euros fifty.

To discover or maybe rediscover Oulu, a guided walking tour in English is offered June 27 between 6pm and 8pm, departing in front of the City hall, at Kirkkokatu 2a. And of course it’s Midsummer soon. The Midsummer Festival in Oulu takes place from June 22 to June 23: you can spend the magical midsummer nights in the middle of the city (Market hall, Rantakatu), in the warm and cozy atmosphere of the old salt granaries, with music and dance.

Hyvää Juhannusta!
