A Black Heart And The End Of The World Print E-mail

ImageThe third and final movie in the Pirates of the Caribbean trilogy; At World's End, is finally at the movie theatre. Irene Pleym Jakola has some advice: properly refresh your memory on the two previous movies (The Black Pearl, Dead Man's Chest) before you pay the ticket price, or this one will be quite confusing.

Lord Beckett (Tom Hollander), head of the East Indian Trading Company, possesses the heart of Davy Jones and with it all the seas of the world, and is executing everyone he suspects has ever had anything to do with pirates. When this rumour reaches Elizabeth Swann (Keira Knightley) and Will Turner (Orlando Bloom), they warn the ‘nine Pirate Lords.’ The nine now have to unite their forces against Beckett and Jones, which is a problem because Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp), one of the nine, is dead and must be brought back before anything can be done.

With as much money as they've made with these movies, you couldn't really blame Disney if they came up with a fourth Pirates of the Caribbean. Sadly you can't tell the quality of a movie from how much money it makes, especially not when it comes to follow-ups. If you liked the first, you'll very likely see the second and third as well, and even more likely you'll be disappointed.

At World's End is unfortunately a let-down. As much as I love Johnny Depp for his acting and his looks, and as much as I'd love to love this film, it’s too complicated. A question mark best describes what I looked like in the theatre. I constantly had to ask the boyfriend, who’d been clever enough to read through the plots of the previous movies, why and how this and that worked - and even he had difficulties following.

I'm unsure whether it saved me from falling asleep – or just made it more difficult to follow the complicated plot – but World’s End had, at least, plenty of action. At one point I caught myself sitting with my mouth open, popcorn hand frozen in mid-air, so I must have been entertained at some level.

This movie is best enjoyed when you've done your homework, and even then it feels like an exam that you haven't studied for. On the bright side, Johnny Depp is dancing around in a pirate outfit on your exam papers.
