Calendar and pen at the ready? Mirja Krause has a hamper of April suggestions.

With winter almost over, time to move your tired limbs to the beat of electronic music at ClubZone. The Club Zone Easter Special dance at Radisson SAS Night Club on April 5 at 22.00, tickets 6 euros. Rather watch someone else shindig? April has two ballroom dancing competitions. Oulun Kunkkukisa X, on April 14 and 15 at the Oulu Urheiluhalli, has been arranged by the Jari Aaltonen dance school and local club Iso O. Semifinals begin at 9.00 and finals at 14.00 both days, and Sunday offers salsa – an extra.

The April 21 Finnish Latindance championships will cha-cha, rumba, and samba across the  Rantankatu 5 sportshall, and from April 27 to 29 the modern dance production Raamattu Show (‘Bible Show’) will explode onto the big hall at Nuku, the Oulu City Centre for Youth and Culture on Hallituskatu 7.

At the art museum, the recently openedKauneuspato or “Dam of Beauty” displays the work of Reijo Hukkanen, sculptor and Oulu resident, from a broad sweep of of his career. Originally a painter, he has since the eighties sculpted objects. This artist, reputedly exceptional, is known for diverse origins, forms, colors, and materials. The Oulu symphony orchestra’s series of chamber music events, “Chamber music in a white city,” continues through April with Music with A String Quartet on April 1, Soli Amici Wind Quartet on April 2, and a final performance is on April 2 - all three take place at 14.00 at the Oulu city hall.

For more classical, visit the Paulo Cello Competition on April 19 or Kuusisto and Beethoven with Jaakko Kuusisto as conductor and soloist on April 26; both performances take place at the Madetoja Concert Hall, 19.00.

Indie rock? On April 8m 9.30 pm, 45 Special on Saaristonkatu will host Morley and Lodger, the Finnish indie rockers with a widespread cult internet following for their flash music videos. Tickets six euros. A little further in the future, Paprika Korps rock polish on April 15 at 20.00, also for six euros. And leathered goth-heads The 69 Eyes perform in Club Teatria on April 22, “ready to take over the world with a sleazy blend of post- apocalyptic rock‘n’roll.”

Local footfall fans can catch this month’s AC Oulu league cup game, AC Oulu against FC Viikingit, at Paulaharjuntie on April 21.

For a family weekend, try KevätVäkkärä, the summer kick-off’ in Rotuaari, April 28, with a variety of shows and activities for all ages. Spend the day in the city, have your first ice cream of the year, and explore the shops and exhibitions. When it rains, take the kids to Tietomaa’s “In Motion” exhibition, where they’ll moonwalk, spin in a spinning bowl, and build a ball alley. Tietomaa is open from 10.00 to 18.00 every day until July; its most visible landmark, a 45 meter high tower, gives a magnificent view over Oulu is accessable by a glass elevator. Come down by the stairs and you’ll see an astronomy exhibition and a hologram gallery.

And don’t forget, Wappu is around the corner, so you could even warm up at one of the student parties.
