ImageThere was another gang rape, allegedly at the hands of immigrants, in an Oulu park over the weekend.

A seventeen year-old Oulu woman was raped on Saturday night between 1.20 and 2a.m. in Heinätori Park in Heinäpää, near the city the centre. The incident has been reported in all of Finland’s national newspapers, as this is the third rape, in similar circumstances, to be reported in the city in just three months and the second alleged immigrant gang rape.

According to Kaleva, the young woman was walking through the park when she was followed by four men. One of the men raped her while the others restrained her. The rape lasted a short time and the woman had no visible wounds. The park is between Kirkkokatu and Torikatu, a few minutes by foot from the city centre and is a commonly used shortcut.

The woman rang the police and was fetched by an ambulance. The police interviewed her about the rape the following day. According to the victim, the group members were aged between 25 and 30 and wore dark clothes. They spoke a language other than Finnish and the woman thought they might have been from a Mediterranean country.

The woman described the rapist as being 1.75 metres tall and of average build. He had short dark hair, a pointy nose and a large mole near one of his eyes. The rapist was also wearing a silver necklace.

Police have yet to make a breakthrough with either the Christmas gang rape in Otto Karhi Park or the rape in Tuira a month later. The rape just before Christmas aroused fury amongst Kaleva readers and an angry debate over immigration to Oulu and Finland more broadly. A similar discussion has arisen on the Kaleva website over this incident with many contributors calling for Finland’s borders to be closed and for immigrants to ‘go home.’ However, the discussion forum is known for its forthright opinions and Oulu’s police commissioner has tried to stress that there is no concrete evidence of a connection between the three rapes.

Not everyone in Oulu agrees with the views expressed on Kaleva’s website. A spokesman for Oulu’s ‘Co-ordinator for Multicultural Affairs’ emphasised in this newspaper in November that ‘not all immigrants are the same’ and ‘things would be different if (Oulu people) go to know (immigrants)’ before criticising them all.

Police announced on Tuesday that an artist’s interpretation on the seventeen year-old victim’s description of her attacker may well released and DNA evidence looked into.
