Oulu Art Museum has started English language guided tours according to a recent article in The Kaleva. The newspaper interviewed a number of Chinese Oulu residents who were very pleased about tours around the gallery’s new exhibitions ‘Silence and Violence’ and ‘Collage.’ They all agreed that there were already quite good services for foreigners through the medium of English in the city. The English language guidance has been introduced to cater for the increasing numbers of foreign tourists, immigrants, international students and exchange students coming to Oulu. According to Anne Rännäli, Oulu Council’s International Affairs director, the city is constantly trying to think of new ways to provide services for foreigners and immigrants through the medium of English. Most Oulu residents interviewed for this newspaper were in agreement with the policy of providing services for foreigners in English. A minority felt that it discouraged immigrants from learning Finnish but many agreed with one young Finnish woman who countered simply, ‘but Finnish is so hard.’
