Oulu’s International Children’s theatre festival takes place this week, including plays in a number of European languages.

There will not only be performances in Finnish but also in Swedish, Norwegian and Russian between 19th and 24th February.

On the 20th February children over eight will be treated to ‘Thomas Tryggve’ from Norrbottensteatern in Sweden called Thomas & Tryggve. It looks at a friendship between two ten-year old boys which is put to the test when a stronger one has to stand up for a weaker one.

The next day there will be another Swedish play about a boy and his band ‘Bert and The He-man Hunters’ performed by Unga Teatern. Children over 10-years old are welcome to enjoy this rock musical.

‘The Little Mermaid’ on the 23rd February. Performed by Petrozavodsk State Puppet Theatre, this Russian language play is a mixture of puppet theatre, shadow theatre and live actors which together make a visually impressive performance. On the same day there will be another performance in Russian, ‘Creation of the World.’ The story is based on the first two poems of Kalevala and it has been described as a ‘visually stunning’ performance by eight young actors. The show is aimed at children over eight and the second one for those over twelve.

There will also be a play performed in Sámi language. ‘The Teacher’ is a black comedy about a teacher who finally becomes exasperated with his mean students and cruel colleagues.

The opening ceremony will be free of charge and will take place in the Oulu city’s theatre on the 19th February at 18.00. Other events and performances have a fee that varies from €5 to €9 per play. The tickets are already available from Oulu’s Theatre’s city ticket office in Kaarlenväylä 2 and reservations are also possible.
