What´s On In Oulu: Laskiainen Print E-mail

Laskiainen (Feb 20), originally a Christian festivity but now a sledging competition and a party afterwards, is just a blink away. Still no idea where to go in the evening? Mirja Krause has two recommendations to end your misery.

45 Special.  Organised by Kultu Ry, the Student Organisation of Cultural Research, 45 Special will host ‘Laskiainen on the Rocks.’ The party starts at 22.00 with an entrance fee of only 4 Euros. This is a special treat for those hooked on Finnish rock and pop: three bands, Heimiä, locals Myrkkykieli, and Saaste, are on stage in the three storey club. 45 Special is known for its variety of national and international bands. It offers a lot of places to sit and dance within a nice gloomy atmosphere – all of which promises a ‘hell’of an event.  Find the club on Saaristonkatu 12 close to the pedestrian area.

Radison SAS. This year the Student Guild of Mechanical Engineering’s party will happen in Radison SAS. It starts with the Happy Hour at 21.00, won’t end before 04.00, and the tickets are only 7 Euros; you can purchase them at the door or at the university the week before. SAS is a big club with a huge dance floor and bar. An upstairs floor can be opened up additionally for a stage, another bar and a lot of seats. This event offers Finnish rock by the rather famous girlband Indica upstairs. Downstairs has the usual mix of 80’s dance music, hiphop, and techno. If you’re a student guild member, strap on your overalls. If not, flip out your best disco. You’ll find Radisson SAS near the market place on Halituskatu 1.

Can’t wait to the evening? Go watch students sliding down a hill. Sledging starts at 14.00 on the twentieth at Reikunmäki in Raksila behind the public swimming pool, and is free. Koneinsinöörikilta ry is organising the event for the fourtieth time. This is facefuls of fun, especially if you are taking part yourself. Wear warm clothes, bring warming drinks, and don’t forget your camera - to photograph the team costumes and sled decorations. If you like watching (and you’re a student), make a note in your calendar to form a team yourself and take part in 2008. The guild provides sledges.
