A Christmas Star on Rotuaari
These days Oulu’s city centre and pedestrian street “Rotuaari” is decorated with shining stars made of yellow fabric, and different kinds of electric lights and festoons with colourful bulbs. Yes, it’s time to light up for the Christmas season, and let these and other artificial lights serve as bright spots in the everyday life of Oulu’s citizens and visitors! Illuminating a city at Christmas is also known elsewhere in Finland and in other countries around the globe. But Oulu has much more to offer – a number of local events give people who are living in and visiting Oulu the opportunity to briefly forget the surrounding darkness of the Arctic night:

Star Boys’ Pageants

"Ketunmaan Tiernataikurit" - Star Boys from the town of Liminka, performing in Oulu on November 25
On the weekend, November 25-26, a contest of so-called Star Boys took place in the city centre. Groups of boys and girls, called “tiernapojat”, or “star boys”, performed pageants on Rotuaari Square. The pageants staged in Oulu include parts that are sung and spoken, and they are originally based on Biblical stories dealing with the birth of Christ and the three wise men travelling to the land of Judea, following an

exceptionally bright star. These kinds of pageants date back to the mystery plays of medieval central Europe, and they spread to Finland and other countries over the last two centuries. The pageants in today’s Oulu are rather unique, however, as their story involves King Herod, his servant “Knihti”, the King of the Moors, and the Star Twirler “Mänkki”.

The contest held in Oulu allowed for a variety of Star Boys’ pageants typical of the Oulu region, including a modern one with modifications in content and music. Usually, the pageants last around 15 minutes, and at the end, the performers ask the audience for a small change donation. The text of the pageants can be obtained

both in English and Finnish from the link listed below. In the coming days Star Boys’ performances can be occasionally enjoyed in cafés and restaurants downtown. From December 1-21, every day at 18:00 a group of “tiernapojat” will perform in the Oulu City Theatre, and on December 11 a special theatre themed evening will take place at 19:00, free of charge.

The Coronation of Oulu’s Lucia

On December 9 at 14:00, Oulu’s Lucia will be crowned on Rotuaari Square. Each year a girl from the Swedish school is chosen for that purpose. She receives a crown with lit candles, and is dressed in a white robe. This tradition came to Finland from Sweden, and it commemorates the martyr death of a Christian maiden, Saint Lucy, who lived between 283-304 A.D. on the island of Sicily. According to the legend, Lucia was tortured to death, because she refused to accept a pagan man she was supposed to marry. It is also told that she could resist her persecutors for quite some time by miracles and divine intervention, but eventually died. Lucia means “light”, her name deriving from the Latin root “lux”. The white dress of Lucia symbolises purity. The reason for crowning her with lit candles is related to an ancient light festival, which used to be celebrated at the winter solstice.

“Pikkujoulut” – “Little Christmas” Parties

During “kaamos” – the darkest time of the year in Scandinavia – people in Finland and Oulu create a light and merry atmosphere by arranging “pikkujoulut”, literally “Little Christmas” parties. They take place in schools and work places, or in private homes. Usually, the hosts serve Finnish Christmas dishes and “glögi”, a spiced hot wine or red grape juice. Sometimes the guests are also asked to bring along some food, and the party is then celebrated in the form of a potluck meal. Normally, people come to “pikkujoulut” wearing a red cap, “tonttulakki”, or in clothes based on a special dress code. Most likely, a fun programme will enhance the mood of the partygoers – one shouldn’t miss the opportunity to attend a “Little Christmas” party!

Christmas Events in Churches

The International Christmas Carols Service on December 9 at 17:00 in the Cathedral (Kirkkokatu) is a must for anyone who enjoys carols, candles, and coffee or tea. It will be held in English and Finnish, and a few choirs will perform Christmas songs, in addition to the sing-along carols. It’s also possible to join the “Kauneimmat joululaulut”, when the “most beautiful” Christmas carols are chosen and sung in Finnish churches. These events are usually quite popular. On December 17 at 18:00, it will be arranged in the Church of Tuira (Myllytie 5) with simultaneous translation from Finnish into English.

A Christmas Service and Celebration in German will be organised on December 13 at 18:00 in St. Luke’s Chapel (Yliopistokatu 7).
On December 15 at 18:30 an International Christmas Celebration, entitled “Let the Light Shine”, will take place in the Pentecostal Church of Oulu (Uusikatu 78). Various church members and the youth group “Lift” will stage a Christmas drama with songs and dance. The celebration will be held in English and Finnish, and it will be translated simultaneously into French, German and Russian. Afterwards there will be time for fellowship, singing of Christmas carols and music performed by a church band. Coffee, tea, and Finnish Christmas delicacies will be served.
Last but not least, Oulu offers many more events to lighten and cheer you up. So, keep your eyes open and look for happenings around you…
