With temperatures in the mid-twenties, Oulu’s Taivalkoski fire brigade have saved a moose calf from starvation. The animal had sunk into a forest quagmire near a built-up area. Once pulled out, the moose rested for a while on dry ground. When it finally got up, it was observed moving with one leg straight.

Members of the fire brigade reportedly tapped the animal’s foot a little, after which it worked as normal. Then the animal began to eat ravenously.

Matti Jurmu, Taivaikoski’s deputy firechief, speculated to Oulu’s Kaleva that the young moose had lain in the swamp for some time. The same animal has slept in the area all summer, looking for relief from the hot weather, he said.
