People flying from Helsinki to Oulu increasingly find that their luggage turns-up the next day.
Finnavia’s desk at Oulu Airport is now equipped with numerous ‘over-night bags’ to give to passengers whose toilet bag is trapped in Helsinki.
‘I don’t know what the problem is,’ a Finnavia worker, who wished to remain nameless, told 65DN. ‘There is this new company that is in charge of baggage handling in Helsinki and, I don’t know, it’s just not very good.’
A Finnair passenger, recently arrived from Helsinki, told 65DN of her amazement that her luggage did not arrive with her.
‘I came into Helsinki on an international flight and my connection to Oulu was four hours later,’ she said. ‘I find it hard to believe that they couldn’t transfer my luggage in four hours! This is the second time that this has happened to me.’
The passenger’s luggage arrived – in a taxi – the following evening. ‘You can’t ring to find out when it’s coming. Nobody answers the phone and the people at the airport just said it’s difficult to say when it will arrive.’
Baggage Handling at Helsinki Vantaa Airport has outsourced to a company called Barona. The airport’s baggage handlers caused major disruption to winter holiday-makers when they went on strike in December, leading to a huge bag-log of luggage and massive delays.
However, it was alleged, in January, by anonymous staff that there is an on-going ‘unofficial strike’ involving a deliberate ‘slowdown’ by baggage handlers. This allegation was forcefully rejected by officials as being a ‘lie’.
