Google Street View Reaches City Print E-mail

Google officially launched the Finnish version of Google Street View yesterday.  A photographic map is now online for all to see, including photographs of people caught by the Google Street View photographer going about their daily business.

Various newspapers around the world have claimed that innovation helps burglars and is an invasion of privacy, especially because it has photographed people through the windows of their houses.

Google has played down the concerns. “If someone sees themselves, their child, license plate or home in too much detail, they can let Google know by hitting the ‘report a problem’ button,” insists Google Finland’s spokesman Timo Nurmi. “It’s important that people aren’t insulted by the service.”

The photographs of Finland were taken over a period of five months in 2008. There were complaints at the time that it captured Finland in its worst light – in the spring when the snow is melting – but by the time the Google car reached Oulu the weather was sunny and all the snow had gone.

The faces of all the many people photographed doing their shopping or crossing the Oulu’s main roads all appear to be blurred out.
