Oulu’s Valentine’s Day will be about more than ‘friendship’ this year as the city celebrates the Chinese New Year.

ImageCentred around the Valve Culture Centre, the day-long series of events is scheduled to include Chinese workshops, a movie and even a performance of the acrobatic Beijing Opera.  Oulu’s eager Sinophiles will have the chances to learn Chinese calligraphy, Chinese chess, Chinese face painting and even how to make Chinese paper lanterns.

‘This is the first time we’ve organised a celebration of Chinese New Year in Oulu,’ said Raisa Saarala of Valve. ‘It will be full of Chinese atmosphere and Chinese people and everyone will get to know a very interesting culture.’

‘This is also the first time the Beijing Opera has been in northern Finland. And there will also be Chinese food!’ she added.

China’s traditional lunasolar calendar means that the New Year falls on different dates in January or February each year. The years move in cycles of twelve zodiacal animals, with each year named after an animal. 2010 is the year of the Tiger, which is roughly equivalent to the Western Aquarius in its various meanings and associations.
