Up to eighty-five people working for India-based Wipro technology in Oulu, Rovaniemi and Kokkola may lose their jobs.
The cuts, which will also affect workers in Pori, were announced last week by the Information Technology company which blamed ‘challenging industry situation in the sector.’ Wipro Technologies employs 300 people in Finland. Operations in Helsinki, Tampere, Turku and Seinijöki are not expected to be scaled-back.
The slowdown in the telecom sector has had a crippling effect on companies which provide software to the telecommunications industry.
Wipro (an acronym for ‘Western Indian Vegetable Products’) was established in 1947. Originally producing cooking fats, it entered the IT-sector in the 1970s. Between 2002 and 2007, its revenue grew by 450 percent. But it has been severely hit by the recession.
