Strip-Searched with an X-Ray Print E-mail

Finnish airport security may soon begin effective strip-searches of passengers based on their religion of country of origin.

Passenger profiling may be adopted in Finland introduces the X-Ray scanning machines.

The machines are controversial because they mean that the passenger’s naked outline – including anatomical details – is clearly visible.

Finavia – the Finnish airport authority – is seriously considering introducing the electro-magnetic machines.

However, they are large and expensive so could not replaced the metal-detectors currently in use.

Accordingly, Finavia’s head of corporate security Jyri Vikström told a syndicate of regional newspapers that they may profile passengers according to religion or nationality.

However, in an interview with 65DN, Finavia’s Chief of Security, Tuomo Kivakari, wanted to play down the remarks.

‘We have no policy on this at the moment because it does not accord with European law,’ he said. ‘We will be happy to think about it but the EU Law would have to be changed. Also these machines are very costly and there are questions about where to put them.’

Doubt
Reading this report makes me very angry with guys who have recently caused troubles. I wonder if I should complain whenever my naked outline is presented, although I certainly feel uneasy in such cases.

At Finnish airports, I see that security staffs usually use their hands to check one's body, certainly from the surface. It seems acceptable for doubtful cases. However, if anatomical details of passengers are visible, it seems tough, at least for me.

I do agree that backgrounds of a passenger should be reviewed before deciding whether a guy must be checked by an X-Ray scanning machine. To me, it makes no sense if all passengers have to be gone through scanners.

Finavia should also strip search and check carefully all Finnish mean between ages of 24 to 45... Especially since this is the age group having knives as well as taking part in shootings and school massacres... Also, women between the ages of 45-55 working as care givers at elderly homes should be checked at the airports...

Equality screening protecting all of our civil liberties.

Also, in this day and age, if someone when checking in has no bags, a one way ticket, pays in cash and is going on such a long flight, regardless of ethnicity, red flags should be raised at the first ticket desk. Better training equals better security.

Just to comment- this scanners are not even close to X-ray machinery(different radiation, as I believe).
It makes difference since X-rays are dangerous for living organisms. Thus it's use should be limited as much as possible (only when needed for medical purposes, and in doses as small as possible).

Scanners mentioned in the article are maybe controversial, but rather not because of radiation used.

you are right about the scanners and radiation... my argument is equal random screening, not based on profiling someone's skin color or religion. that was my point, equality...
