Finnish airport security may soon begin effective strip-searches of passengers based on their religion of country of origin.
Passenger profiling may be adopted in Finland introduces the X-Ray scanning machines.
The machines are controversial because they mean that the passenger’s naked outline – including anatomical details – is clearly visible.
Finavia – the Finnish airport authority – is seriously considering introducing the electro-magnetic machines.
However, they are large and expensive so could not replaced the metal-detectors currently in use.
Accordingly, Finavia’s head of corporate security Jyri Vikström told a syndicate of regional newspapers that they may profile passengers according to religion or nationality.
However, in an interview with 65DN, Finavia’s Chief of Security, Tuomo Kivakari, wanted to play down the remarks.
‘We have no policy on this at the moment because it does not accord with European law,’ he said. ‘We will be happy to think about it but the EU Law would have to be changed. Also these machines are very costly and there are questions about where to put them.’
