Naked at minus 20 Print E-mail

Well, not quite naked. But thousand of tourists found themselves shivering in Arctic temperatures last week because their baggage failed to turn-up at the airport.

Twenty thousand tourists arrived in Northern Lapland for winter holidays to be informed that their baggage was nowhere to be found. As such, many of them were left without any warm clothes to protect against the nose-diving temperatures.

The delay was caused by the baggage fiasco at Helsinki-Vantaa airport. At the beginning of the week, 4000 bags had been left stranded there without their owners. At the time of writing, it is down to a few hundred.

Finn Air have blamed the delay on snowy weather leading to flight schedule changes but unions have the claimed the fault lies with a shortage of baggage-handling staff due to redundancies.

British tourist Anne, 55, had come to Oulu to see her baby grand-daughter.

‘When we got to Oulu airport our luggage was not there,’ Anne told 65DN. ‘We were told it was because we had a quick connection between Helsinki and Oulu and so there wasn’t time for the baggage to catch-up.’

‘It was frustrating because the hand luggage contained a lot of my grand-daughter’s presents,’ said the British woman, who was accompanied by her 85 year-old mother.

‘But, the next day, Finn Air sent a taxi to the house they were staying in to give their bags.

Other tourists have not been so fortunate. YLE News interviewed a man from Uruguay had come for a skiing holiday. All his equipment was in his hold luggage and he only received it right at the end of his holiday. They also interviewed a Portuguese family whose six year-old asthmatic daughter’s medicine was left stranded in their checked-in baggage.

Worker's right???
As I understand it from various newspapers, the strike is an illegal one. Who is really at fault here?

My brother was also left without his baggage when he visited us. That wasn't such a big deal as he was staying with his favourite big sister, who wouldn't see him go naked! However, the lack of communication and information from Finnair was unacceptable! A manned, free phoneline for such occasions surely can't be that difficult to provide!

Fortunately there are also other airlines operating in Finland so that it is also possible for the customers to do a counterstrike to Finnair and get better service ...
