Oulu Officials to be Made to Learn Swedish Print E-mail

Council officials in Northern Ostrobothnia are to have compulsory courses in Swedish, according to Kaleva.

The courses are aimed at facilitating better ‘bilingual services’ in Northern Ostrobothnia. The organisers hope to have achieved this by 2011.

A recent report on language and local government found that less than half of municipal officials speaking Swedish to a level which would allow them to work through the medium.

Oulu has around 300 Swedish-speakers and a Swedish-language school where many of the pupils are bilingual with both Finnish and Swedish.

Strange idea.
Wouldn't it be better, given only 300 Swedish speakers in Oulu (about 4 busloads), to teach the officials Persian?

Since Oulu is supposedly international, maybe an English course or 2 would be good too. Wow, Oulu City officials must be bored trying to think of ways to spend money...
