Whether you want to get the basics of a foreign language or take the kids to hear fairy tales in different tongues, Oulu's European Language Day events claim to offer something for the budding linguist in all of us.

All the activities are free,' emphasises the co-ordinator, school teacher Eeva-Liisa Pääkkönen. 'The multi-lingual fairytales, the language cafe and, of course, the concert.'

In honour of European Language Day - next Saturday the 26th September - the European Commission will be funding a series of language-themed events on Friday 25th.

'Fairytales in different languages' will be performed in the city library between 9am and 11am for the entertainment of children of kindergarden age in English, German French and Italian.

At the same time, anybody interested in languages is invited to the Valve Culture Centre where 'different language tables will be hosted by different native-speakers. There will be free coffee and a language-based quiz,' enthused the cordinator. The languages on offer will include French, Portuguese, Sami and Swedish.

And, later in the afternoon, between 2 and 5pm, there will be a 'language bustle' - a series of performances in Rotuaari including one by Finnish Idols winner and heart-throb Koop Arponen, who sings in both English and Finnish. At the same time information on different languages - along with balloons - will be provided.

The European Day of Languages was set-up by the European Council in 2001.
