Sixty-Five Degrees North is looking for freelance writers to write articles in English on everything from columns to news to current events.

If you're living in Finland, write solid, lively prose to a deadline, and have the time to commit to more than one article, we'd love to hear from you. Contact us This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it , and along with your details, please submit a sample piece written for 65 Degrees - of around 500 words - on a topic of your choice, also stating in which section you feel the article should be published.

Tips for Submitting Articles

65 Degrees North edits freelance submissions. An article may be published or rejected, or an editor may send it back asking for changes.
At no point are any comments intended as vindictive or personal, and no party - neither the newspaper or its writers - is forced to publish. If you are unhappy, you may withdraw your submission at any time up until publication. By submitting an article you are guaranteeing that the article is your own work, that you consider it finished, and that it has not appeared elsewhere.

Fresh quotes, openly stated sources, focused, objective detail, a snappy introduction, and good use of paragraphs go a long way towards a readable article!  By far the four most common reasons we don't publish pieces are:

1) Not enough lively description and specifics

The writer is the reader's eyes, ears, nose, and fingers. Writing without enough specifics just doesn't have the same emotional impact. And make sure the article moves! If you find yourself using 'is' a lot, force yourself to pick another verb.

2) Content a few minute's googling would duplicate

Mainly encyclopedic articles in newspapers tend to tire readers out quite quickly, mainly because the information is old. Investigate, conduct interviews, connect your story to your surroundings.

3) Poor structure through too much filler (repetition, commonplace observations, dense, flowery language)

Editors spend a lot of time deleting excess words. Use the large elephant principle - don't point out what everyone expects, or use complicated words just to be complicated.

4) An absence of independent thought.

Organise your article in paragraphs, use Arial 10 point, and check the grammar, punctuation, and spelling!
