Hear the hype! See the posters! Save up your five cent coins! This Friday and Saturday brings QStock 2009, ‘Northern Finland’s biggest rock festival’ with 50 acts over four stages, to Oulu’s Kuusisari. Finnish performers include Apulanta, Maija Vilkkumaa, Kotiteollisuus, Happoradio, PMMP, Amorphis, The Rasmus, Kauko Röyhkä, Egotrippi, CMS, Stam!na, Maj Karma, and Maija Vilkkumaa.
The foreign bands are Anthrax, Major Parkinson, and Pain on Friday, and on Saturday Elephant 9 and Heaven & Hell,which if you aren’t familiar with the band is Ronnie James Dio, Tony Iommi, Geezer Butler, and Vinny Appice–the same Black Sabbath lineup as 30 years ago–playing Sabbath songs and tracks from the their new release.
Tickets are 39€ in advance for Friday or 45€ at the gate; 43€ Saturday or 50€ at the gate; and 69€ both days in advance or 75€ at the gate; and are available at Levykauppa Äx or from Lippupalvelu.
If that isn’t enough musical shenanigans, according to promotional literature ‘the Kuusisaari beach will come alive in a completely new way in QStock 2009 for Real Deal beach parties...this shit be hotter than lava!’ The beach parties, included in the price of QStock entrance, offer dance music, live acts, and sideshows with Djs including Chicago Pekka, Teppo Meno, and Jay Honey.
Q-Stock t-shirts are also available for 15€ from Stockmann and Micks reading “QStock 2009” in bubbly flame-coloured letters over a burning heart and a sailing ship.
And if you still haven’t had enough QStock, 45 Special at Saaristonkatu 12 have their own accompanying programme including Qmotus Club on Thursday (5€/6€), Kinetik Control at 1.00 on Friday (5€/6€), and Thunderbaum at 1.00 on Saturday (5€/6€).
A Promenade in old Oulu, a free walking tour of the ‘old’ city in Finnish, leaves from in front of Oulu city hall at Kirkkokatu 2a at 15.00 on Tuesday. A guided walking tour of the city in English leaves from the same address at 15.00 on Wednesday. Statuing in Oulu, a tour of street sculptures and reliefs, leaves the city hall at 15.00 on Thursday. And Much to learn about Oulu, a free, guided bus tour in Finnish and English, leaves the city hall at 15.00 on Saturday.
A sing-a-long evening–entrance free of charge–will happen at Villa Hannala, Kahvelitie 1, at 18.00 on Tuesday. A free summer concert at Saint Thomas’ church on Wednesday, 19.00 at Mielinkintie 3 will feature Timo Huhtala on cello, and Raakel Pöhytäri on the organ and piano. Raimo Paaso will play an organ recital lasting fifteen minutes at 12.15 on Thursday at the city cathedral. A Summer Night’s Musical Moment, an evening of hymns, will take place at Ylikiiminki church at 20.00 on Thursday.
Soul-U are playing 45 Special–Saaristonkatu 12–at 23.30 on Wednesday. Tickets 3€; age limit 18.
The Swingstet group will give a free, fourty-five minute ‘Summer Yard’ swing and classics concert at 17.00 on Friday in the garden of the Oulu art museum at Karsamintie 7.
The Muhos Days Of Music, a run of events in Muhos, 30 km from Oulu, offers classical music concerts on Thursday and Friday at 16.00 at Muhos Church for 15€/12€, and on Saturday at 16.00 at the Birch and Star Cultural Centre, Muhostie 2, for 20€/17€. Musicians include Kaisa Ranta singing soprano, Tuomas Katajala and Jyrki Anttila singing tenor, Mia Räty on violin, and Juho Nissi on cello. In sport, the national Hajen Boat championships hit the Oulu Workers Yacht Club’s port at Puomitie on Pöllisaari from Thursday to Sunday. The national 300 metre rifle and young persons’ pistol championships are at the Hiukkavaara shooting range from Friday to Sunday. The national school horse riding championships are on at the Äimärautio equestrian centre on Äimärautiontie beside the racetrack from Friday to Sunday.
OPS-jp play FCV in men’s second division football at the Castreni pitch on Saturday at 16.00, admittance 7€/4€. In first division baseball, Oulu’s Polte plays Ulvila at the baseball stadium on Ylioppilantie on Saturday at 17.00, admittance 5€. In the men’s baseball superleague, Oulu’s Lippo play Joensuu’s Maila at the baseball stadium at 17.00 on Sunday, tickets 10€/8€.

Jaakko’s Day, the ‘joint traditional celebration’ of the Turkansaari and the Oulu River Association, is happening at the Turkansaari outdoor museum, Turkansaarentie 165, on Saturday at 15.00, entrance 3€/1€. The programme includes a performance of ‘A guy’s life’ by the Cloverleaf Theatre Group.

A 'flat-hat' train parked at Muhos
Fancy a ride on a 50-year-old ‘flat-hat’ museum train, stopping at 50-year old stops, and ending in Muhos?
