This Saturday sees tractor pulling at Tyrnävä.
As temperatures hover at just under 20 degrees, Oulu has tractor pulling, a one-day hip hop festival, and even a regatta.


A pirate adventure cruise leaves the market pier at Kiikeli harbour every day this week on the hour from 11.00 to 17.00, admittance 7€.

Want to go to the Kierikki Stone Age Centre in Yli-II but don’t have a car? Now’s your chance to bus it: a bus leaves the marketplace for the centre on Saturday at 11.00. Tickets are available at 25€ in advance from the Tourist Office at Torikatu 10, including transport and entrance to the museum and the stone age village.

RIina Impiö is playing a midsummer night’s organ concert on Wednesday, with music ‘from three eras of the organ’ at Saint Thomas Church at Mielikintie 3 at 7 pm, admission free. And Raimo Paaso will give a free, 15-minute organ recital on Thursday, 12.00 at Oulu cathedral, admittance free, Henna-Mari Sivula to sing.

If
flute and guitar music appeals, Pekka Elsilä and Lauri Manninen will play ‘light summer swing and classical’ on Friday at 17.00 in the yard of the Oulu art museum at Kasarmintie 7, admittance free.

Puppet Theatre Akseli Klonk will perform On the way to the mill, or “Matkalla Myllylle” at 13.00 on Thursday at the Speed Park on Hietasaarentie, tickets 3€.

A free walking tour of the ‘Oulujoki church area,’ guide Antti Pönkkö, leaves the parking spot outside the Oulu river church at Pappilantie 69 on Thursday at 17.00 to explore the Oulujoki graveyard, church, and priests’ residences. And a two-hour guided cycling tour of Kiikeli harbour leaves the Kiikeli island car park at 15.00. Admittance is free; bicycle rent is 2€ an hour; sign up in advance at the Tourist Information Office at Torikatu 10.

Up for bit of traditional Finnish dance? The Night Bird Dance Orchestra and Shadow Picture band play at the dance lighthouse on Hietasaari on Wednesday at 20.30. Tickets 15€.

The Oulu 18.7 Street (Hiphop, Reggae, Grime) Festival hits the pavilion at Kuusisaari on Saturday from 21.00 to 3.00, tickets 12€ from Hempsteri at Rautatienkatu 6. Bands include rappers OG Ikonen, Jontti & Shaka, Mindman, Petos, Steen1, Kuuro Koria, and More Fire Sound.

Suven Savel
, a ‘light music festival,’ will take over the marketplace from Saturday to Sunday, presented by 1996 miss Finland (and second runner-up to Miss Universe) Lola Wallinkoski and with performers including Kaseva, Johanna Kurkela, Mikko Alatalo, Harri Rinne, and the Grooving High AllStars. Daytime admission (14.00 to 17.00) is free, while tickets for the evening cost 25€.

play a Dio tribute concert on Wednesday night at heavy metal night club Hevimesta, Torikatu 11, as part of the Club 6 FT Under band evening; age limit 18. Heavy metal band Viikate play 45 Special on Saaristonkatu 12 at 22.00 on Thursday, tickets 10€ in advance from Levykauppa Äx at Hallituskatu 29B. Dr Feelgood & Cool Operator play 45 Special on Sunday at 22.00 (tickets 15€). Hard rockers J.J. Hjelt’s Powerdrive are at the Petrelli Saloon on Rantakatu 4 on Friday at 22.30, and the Schmulak Trio on Saturday at 22.30, admission free. A. Aallo’s Ryhthm Orchestra play Finnish pop music at Nightclub Tähti, Pakkahuoneenkatu 19, on Friday evening, and Kade Randeli & Presto on Saturday.

The Oulu Workers Stage Group production of Robert Louis Stevenson’s Treasure Island continues to run at the Hupisaari summer theatre; showings are on Wednesday, Thursday, and Saturday at 19.00, and on Sunday at 15.00. Tickets are 12€/10€/8€ from the ticket office on Stockmann’s third floor.

The premiere of Tar and Diamonds, a stage adaptation of the Venla-award-winning ‘country comedy’ on TV2, hits the stage at Toppila’s Möljä theatre on Friday at Piktänmöljäntie 2. Showings 19.00 Friday and Saturday, and 14.00 Sunday; tickets 26€/22€.

On the sport front, the men’s second division team of Oulu’s OPS football club will play FC OPA, another Oulu team, at the Castreni pitch on Friday, 18.30 at Paulaharjuntie, admission 7€/4€. Or OLS play Seinäjoki at Castreni on Saturday at 16.00; admission also 7€/4€. Or AC Oulu play PS Kemi on Sunday at 18.30, also at the Castreni pitch, tickets 10€/8€/4€.

If baseball’s more your thing, you might want to see Oulu’s Lippo play Jymy from Nurmo (near Seinäjoki) in the men’s super league at the Raksila baseball stadium on Ylioppilantie 4 on Saturday at 17.00, tickets 10€/8€.

Like spotting yachts? Bothnia Squadron 2009, a 10-day, 12 nautical mile yachting competition arranged by Swedish-Finnish yachting club Kalix, set sail on Monday last week from Puomitie 1 and continues its run through Röyttä, Kemi, Haaparanta, and Piteå.

The Oulu Regatta, arranged by the Oulu Sailing Association, is happening this weekend at the Hietasaari boating centre http://www.ouluntelakkasaatio.fi/.

A heat of the Finnish Tractor Pulling Championships is going down at Kankaanlaita 1, Tyrnävä on Saturday at 11.00; tickets 12€ or children under 12 free.
