Magic, punk rock, and frisbee golf: we look at what's happening in Oulu this week.


Magic Oulu
, a new ‘magical city event for all the family,’ will hit Oulu this weekend. The event will bring street magic to Rotuaari on Saturday from 11.00 to 15.00, magic lessons for 9 to 14 year olds to Cultural Centre Valve on Friday from 10.00 to 14.00 (admission 15€) and two separate Saturday shows to the Oulu Theatre, including ‘Watti Lighthead and the Missing Glow’ at 16.00, tickets 10€ from the theatre or Stockmann’s third floor.

The Finnish Nature Conservation society is arranging “Plants and Villa History,” a two-hour trip around Hietasaari learning about the history of its old villas and examining local plantlife. The ramble heads off from Seelari harbour at 12.00.

Punk rock outfit Duff McKagan’s Loaded, solo project for ex-Guns N’Roses and current Velvet Revolver bassist Duff McKagan, will play at Teattria on Thursday at 21.00. Tickets cost 30€/25€ in advance from Lippupalvelu or Levykauppa Äx. Minimum age 18.

Indie-pop band Rubik are playing at 45 Special on Friday at 22.00, for 8€. Again, minimum age for admission is 18.

If you’re in the mood for a marching band, the Finnish Defence Forces band will be tapping drums and blowing trumpets in Rotuaari at 12.00 on Thursday, admission free.

The Sunny Power Cup, the world’s largest youth volleyball tournament, arrives in Oulu’s Raksila sports ground on Thursday. Over 930 teams will compete on 300 outdoor courts. Also, the ‘Oulu Open’ for Frisbee golf expects over a hundred players at Mannisenojanpuisto in Paalikatu, Meri-Toppila from 8.00 to 16.00 – spectators welcome.

The outdoor museum on Turkansaari opens its new exhibition “Hello to the time of ghosts” on Friday at Turkansaarentie 165. Admittance 3€/1€.

Oulu's art galleries are bulging with exhibitions. A short selection:

Ilona Kivijärvi’s “Intuition” is showing at Galleria 5 on Hallituskatu every day until June 18.  “A Time of Frost,' a collection of photographs whose photographers have ‘searched for the original, untouched beauty of the north or documented local day-to-day life,’ is showing at the art museum until Saturday. Borderland,” pastels by Hilkka Liikkanen, are on display at the Galleria Art Halvare at Saarelansaarentie from Wednesday to Sunday, 12.00 to 17.00. And Heroes, a collection of photographs by young immigrants living in Oulu, is showing at the Oulu City Library.
