Never had any training in first aid? Now’s your chance. For the first time ever, the Oulu Red Cross are offering subsidised courses in English. Deadline for admission: April 17.

The Oulu chapter of the Finnish Red Cross is organizing a course in first aid in English on April 24 and 25. Lasting about eight hours, the course will cover a variety of topics from how to help in an emergency to how to call for help and how to aid an unconscious person.
According to Miriam Attias, development officer for Multicultural Activities at the Red Cross office in Oulu, the course will be subsidized almost to the tune of fifty percent by the Finnish Red Cross Oulu in order to encourage people to participate.
“This is a trial version,” Ms. Attias commented. “It’s the first time in Oulu and probably in the whole of Finland when the Red Cross will be subsidizing the First Aid course, because the course is the most important source of revenue for the organization.”
The Finnish Red Cross is one of the largest civic organizations in the country with close to 95,000 members in 550 local branches. It has over 200,000 blood donors, 70,000 regular contributors and thousands of volunteers. About 80,000 people take part annually in their course, the costs of which are usually picked up by individual participants or by companies and organizations looking to improve the first aid skills of their employees.
Successful participants will be awarded an officially recognized Red Cross certificate after the course, and can choose to become integral parts of the active core of Red Cross volunteers who are on duty at many events such as concerts, matches taking place all over Finland.
“Volunteers are also needed for campaign events such as Red Cross week, Hunger Day, Fund raising for Disaster Fund and to serve as friends and help for lonely, ill and socially excluded people,” continues Ms. Attias.
“I think it’s important for foreigners to become involved in the activities of the Finnish Red Cross because it helps in making them an integral part of the society” opines Miriam, “- and that’s the reason why the target audience for this course are foreigners living in Oulu.”
The venue for the course will be the Red Cross Oulu District Office, Uusikatu 22, 90100 Oulu. The cost of 30€ will include a year’s membership to the Red Cross for 2009.
