Edward Dutton interviews farmer Eero Pisilä and is impressed by what he has to sell. Jonku Koulu ‘Really, I’m just open to ideas!’ laughs Eero Pisilä. ‘Whatever people want to make this place into . . . it’s all ready.’ The potato farmer and general potato entrepreneur is talking about the eight hectares (sixteen acres) – including a former school that has been converted into a conference centre-cum-guest house – that somehow came into his possession when he purchased a factory near Pudasjarvi, around an hour’s drive from Oulu. ‘Me and my wife try not to come here very often so that we don’t start to love the place too much!’ he smiles. Eero is certain that he wants to sell the place and there is certainly a great deal to sell. Comments (1) |

Members of AIESEC, the student commerce association, are organising a seminar entitled "Business Goes Asia" so that local businesses and students can hear how Oulu technologies should go global – starting with the Asian market. Companies and future employees are expected to attend the event at Kirkkotorin Koulutuskeskus on February 15, at 14.00, where they can sample Asian food, scope out employment prospects, and learn–for example–how Finnish software is developed in Asia. Speakers will include a vice-CEO of a global company and a member of the Oulu chamber of commerce. AIESEC has representatives in 100 countries, and describes itself as 'the international platform for young people to discover and develop their potential.' 'Business goes Asia' is part of 'Horizon,' a project to provide 'valuable knowledge and experience in global understanding and success.' Assisting in Horizon are the city of Oulu, Oulu Chamber of commerce, PKC Group Oyj and CubiCasa Oy. Comments (1) |

Photo by Edward Dutton Edward Dutton interviews computer game designer Lee Walton Lee Walton has been amazed by how willing his Finnish colleagues are to switch into English just for him. ‘I used to live in France and in France the attitude is that they will not speak English and I suppose “fair enough” but here they’re just too nice! If they’re talking and they see me they’ll just swap into English and I’m like “Oh no!” It’s generous to say the least,’ he laughs. Comments (1) |

Dan Murphy visits local school students preparing to do business with the world. To prosper in today’s business environment companies need a global outlook. Nowhere is this better understood than in Oulu, with its technology parks dotted around suburbs full of high-tech firms selling their innovations to the world.
