 Photo by Isabela Ion Edward Dutton meets Hungarian Gabor Valter who may have broken all Oulu expat records by finding a job in just three months It is notoriously difficult for the ‘other half’ of Oulu’s expat technology-workers to find a job and some have to persist for years and years before finding any kind of work or setting up a business. So Hungarian Gabor Valter deserves some kind of expat award. The former school teacher – who has just begun to learn Finnish – has managed to get a job as a cleaner after just three months in the city.  |

With all the wooden houses in and around Oulu, English expat Alex Doran may have hit upon something. Getting hold of the latest machinery, he is in the process of launching an innovative company in northern Finland. If you want old paint removed from a wall quickly and safely he’ll blast it off for you. And that’s just for starters . . . End-to-End Service Alex shows me a bag of the tiny grains of plastic which, when fired under pressure, can strip paint from walls and furniture. Alex also intends to develop this business so that he can sandblast motor vehicles as well.

Marshal Mannerheim Military Science Fund has awarded Oulu University’s Prof. Pentti Leppänen for his research in the field of new radio data communication methods.
Born in Helsinki in 1946, Leppänen is a Professor of Radio Communication Techniques at the University of Oulu and a pioneer in the research and development of new wide-band radio communication techniques.

Braggone, the optoelectronics materials company based in Oulu, has received multi-million dollar funding from TEKES (The National Technology Agency of Finland) to commercialize its polymer materials, primarily targeting semiconductor and photovoltaics and sell them to a world-wide consumer base. TEKES is the funding agency behind Nokia’s dramatic success in the cell phone market.
