Rotuaari Pedestrian Plans in Disabled Controversy Print E-mail

Oulu City Council has met with strong opposition from disability organisations to their plans to limit car traffic at Rotuaari. Although the Council plans include more P-permit parking spaces near Rotuaari, ‘it isn’t enough’ say some. Kaleva has been reporting on the spin off discussion started by the City’s recent plans to make Rotuaari a car free zone after 11.00am.

Oulu Cancels Garlic Festival Print E-mail

Oulu City Centre Association (Oulun Liikekeskus) which is responsible for arranging the annual Garlic Festival in Oulu has decided to cancel the event this summer, reports Kaleva. The organisers are planning to expand the Garlic Festival to a more international food and travel festival again in 2009.

The Maikkula library fire in January has resulted in library after hours return boxes being closed in the Oulu suburbs. Only the main City library return box will stay open at night in the wake of the blaze, started by an Oulu teenager.

ImageOulun Vesi, the Oulu water authority, has sent every Oulu home a pamphlet entitled “H2Oulu,” in which it discusses the intricacies of filtration and sewage, and its plan to obtain permission to supply the town’s water from groundwater sources. Currently, all Oulu’s water supply is pumped from the river.

Dog Theft in Oulu Print E-mail

Kaleva has reported another dog theft in Oulu. A valuable Karelian Bear Dog was stolen from its locked cage in the owner’s yard last Saturday in broad daylight. Two days later the dog was found by chance running loose near the university hospital. It was in good condition and had obviously been looked after by the person involved.

Oulu Agog At Invasion Of Midgets Print E-mail

Oulu is to be overrun by midgets, according to immigration authorities. Pygmies recently ejected from their home in the Unda district of western Brazil met a Finnish crane-driver who suggested that Oulu was a nice place to live, and that they might be good at air guitar. Instead of resuming their slash-and-burn farming in another part of the rainforest, the entire Bulabula tribe will arrive in Oulu airport this Tuesday April 1.

Oulu Excels in Vocational Education Print E-mail

A survey conducted during 2006 and 2007 has ranked Oulu the top province in Finland for interaction between development and vocational education.

A total of 188 vocational institutes took part in the survey, which was commissioned by the Ministry of Education. The worst results were found in the province of Eastern Finland, while the best individual region was Kainuu in Oulu province.
